I come to Kanazawa with a foreign eye, the eye of a Danish weaver and textile designer. Through my visits in workshops and my meetings with craftspeople in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures in April 2017 I could peak into the challenges and motivations for keeping craft traditions alive today. My visits made me curious about the reality that craft exists in today as a part of a globalized culture in which materials, knowledge, tools, labour, influences and products travel across the world.
Spirituality, identity, knowledge and social interaction are keywords that despite the distance between the continents and their local traditions have been concurrently connected with the hand weaving craft by craftsmen I know from Denmark, Japan and Mexico.
Between October 12 and 15 I invite visitors of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa into a hands-on exploration of the hand weaving craft in a mix of tools, materials, colours and patterns from the different continents.
