New Ecology and Artistic Practice
2023.12.17(Sun.)
What is the New Ecology in the post-pandemic? How will Art respond to it? We will invite Timothy Morton, a well-known advocate of the new ecological philosophy, to consider this question. In his book "Ecology without Nature: Toward a Coming Environmental Philosophy," world-renowned philosopher Timothy Morton argues for a new ecology that removes nature from ecological philosophy, which tends to fall into a dualism between nature and humans and puts humans on par with various other things. Coincidentally, the pandemic of the new coronavirus, and disasters caused by environmental change have made us keenly aware that humans are also part of nature. How will art respond to this changing perception of nature for society? To this question, we will hold a symposium with anthropologist Juichi Yamaguchi, artist AKI INOMATA, and philosopher Masatake Shinohara. Kanazawa has produced outstanding philosophers such as Kitaro Nishida and D.T. Suzuki. Zen philosophy will also be reinterpreted as a new ecological theory for the post-coronial era and connected to the creation of contemporary art. Keynote lecture: Timothy Morton Discussion: Timothy Morton, Juichi Yamagiwa, AKI INOMATA, Masatake Shinohara Moderator: Yuko Hasegawa MC: Jin Motohashi

IDEA - Dialogue on Love, Death, and Existence by Two Androids, Keiichiro Shibuya + Takashi Ikegami
2023.10.13(Fri.) - 2023.10.14(Sat.)
“Idea” means figure or form in Greek. Alter3 and Alter4, which represent the world of ideas and phenomena as defined by Plato, are installed facing each other on the stage, and their faces and expressions are projected onto the screen. Alter3’s every spoken word is converted into movement by GPT, with everything down to its movements controlled, while Alter4’s responses to the volume, pitch, and density of the music played by Shibuya and the oscillators attached to its body are modulated to generate periodic movements. The entire script is generated by GPT, which has also learned all of Plato’s works and Karl Popper’s criticisms of Plato. How are these things possible, and what kind of conclusions did they reach?

“Why Yves Klein now? -Considering the Immateriality in the Post-Internet Era”
Saturday, October 1, 2022
This exhibition, "The Timeless Imagination of Yves Klein: Uncertainty and the Immateriality," was conceived in collaboration with Emma Lavigne, CEO of the Pinault Collection, and Yuko Hasegawa, director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. It was inspired by the 2020 exhibition "LE CIEL COMME ATELIER: Yves Klein et ses contemporains" [The Sky as a Studio: Yves Klein and his contemporaries] organized by Emma Lavigne, the director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz at the time. In this occasion, Emma Lavigne and Yuko Hasegawa will give a talk. The exhibition, which explores immateriality in art, features not only the work of Yves Klein, but also that of contemporary artists, and in this way serves as a bridge between the past and the present. This talk session will consider the influence of Yves Klein's imagination, which has not faded even 60 years after his death, on contemporary artists living in the post-Internet era. Yves Klein was also greatly influenced by Japanese culture. Having earned a black belt in judo at Kodokan Institute while he stayed in Japan, he has created a series of performative works inspired by the spirituality of judo. This talk session will also introduce the relationship between Yves Klein and Japan. Speakers: Emma Lavigne (Co-curator of the exhibition, CEO, Pinault Collection) and Yuko Hasegawa (Director, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa) Language: Japanese/English (consecutive interpretation)

International Symposium:
Thinking about the Conservation and Restoration of “Mixed Media”
2017.12.16(Sat.)
The development of industry since the beginning of the twentieth century has flooded society with a multitude of products that involve the composite use of a variety of materials. Like these products that surround us, and perhaps sometimes to an even greater degree, works of contemporary art may be said to be created out of the mixture and interposition of diverse media (elements including both materials and techniques). Although contemporary artists continue to apply innovative materials to art in the pursuit of expressive possibilities, we find more than a few instances in which new materials whose physical properties and durability are in the first place unclear have caused unexpected deterioration in artworks, and it is undeniable that the use of composite materials complicates the conservation and restoration of a work. What steps to preserve and care for such so-called “mixedmedia” artworks can we take to ensure their long-term availability to the public? At this symposium, we bring together specialists involved in art preservation from the US, Hong Kong, and South Korea to think about the conservation and restoration of art collection, drawing inspiration from their own respective practices.

Spilling from the museum out into the city, they develop their projects in a circulatory spiral—first, “meeting” Kanazawa’s districts, people and issues from an art perspective, then making “proposal” of new approaches, initiating creative “action,” and inducing gentle “change.” The goal of all this, over the long term, will be to make Kanazawa a hub of creative activity. Projects are implemented in two-year cycles. On the basis of research conducted last year by project directors, in-residence production of new works will be publically shown in November 2017. AIR21 : Kanazawa Fringe 2016
2016.6.11(Sat.) - 2016.9.11(Sun.)
"AIR21: Kanazawa Fringe" is an artist-in-residence program that ventures outside of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa to examine the challenges, people, and locations of Kanazawa from an artistic perspective. Launched in 2015 under the title of Museum x KNZ Fringe - Meeting with the City, the program was renamed in 2016 to "AIR21: Kanazawa Fringe". Five directors invite artists and creators from around Japan and overseas to collaborate on seven research projects from June to September. The results attained from these projects are to be utilized in a new artist-in-residence program planned for 2017. AIR21 : Kanazawa Fringe 2016 official website * The word "fringe" refers to something regarded as peripheral or marginal. In this program, artists invited from around Japan and overseas interact with various fringe elements of Kanazawa, namely the city and its people, to create new works together during their stay. The program's long-term goal is to transform Kanazawa into a hub for creative activities by implementing a creative cyclical spiral of (1) interacting with the city and its people, (2) proposing new perspectives and values, (3) undertaking creative activities, and (4) bringing about change in the participating artists, the city, and its people.
