牛嶋均が考えたストーリーによれば、直径約200センチメートルの玉が街中のどこかに、どこからか現れ、「すばらしく景色のよい所や、みんなが忘れていた場所にも」(1)ころがり、ある日、ピタリと停まったその場所で、二つに割れてしまいます。玉の中には段ボールやら紐やら木や竹が入っていて、停まったその場所に人が集まって考えたとき、ふと自分たちの基地を作ろうということになりました。基地はどうとでも好きに作れば良く、「こうあるべき」というものはないのですが、おそらく「こうすると、もっとおもしろい」が、唯一の基準となることでしょう。この場合の基地とは、別段敵味方に分かれてどうこうする場所ではなく、子どもたちの間で、仲間以外には秘密にしている遊び場のことです。ふつう基地にいる仲間は、互いに協力し合い、きまりを守らなければなりません。さもなければ、たちまちのうちに基地から出なければならず、快適で楽しい空間から去ることになってしまいます。何もないゼロベースから誰かとともに作るということは、今わたしたちがどのように生きていくのか、という問題であるのと同時に、仲間とそれ以外を分け隔てるものともなりうるということに、気づくことでもあります。[黒澤浩美]


A ball with a diameter of about 200cm filled with pieces of corrugated cardboard, wood and string, appears somewhere in the city. Some people roll the ball together. One day, it stops, splits into two and is placed down. That spot becomes their base. The base is like home where a group of people feels comfortable while others are excluded. There is no standard regarding how to make the base. To cooperate among them is a tacit understanding. To create from zero with teammates brings up an issue of how we should live, and at the same time, we should be aware that the team fellows alienate others.

1963年福岡県生まれ、久留米市在住。80年代は田中泯が主宰していた 「舞塾」に所属。身体パフォーマーとしてヨーロッパを回り帰国。その後、家業の遊具製作所を手伝いながら、自ら遊具を彫刻と呼ぶ作品を発表している。

Born in 1963 in Fukuoka and currently lives in Kurume, Fukuoka. In the 1980s, Ushijima was a member of “Maijuku” led by Tanaka Min. He toured Europe as a performer before starting to help making toys, which was his home business. He is now making outdoor play equipment that can be considered sculptural works.
