空き箱の底を抜き、トレーシングペーパーでふたをした後、ミラーフィルムを筒状にまるめて箱に詰めます。表には色とりどりのセロハンを好きなように貼り込むだけのもの。しかし、これがとても美しいのです。強力な光源の前にかざすと、おどろくほどにきらきらと輝く《光の箱》ができあがります。松村泰三の《光の箱》を光にかざして紹介すると、大人からも子どもからも変わらず驚きの歓声があがります。それは、期せずして雨上がりの虹を見つけたときのようです。はじめて《光の箱》を手にしたひと達は、飽きずに光にかざして動かして、彩られた光のゆらめきを楽しんでいます。この秋、金沢市には「玉川こども図書館」が開館します。その誕生をお祝いして、みんなで《光の箱》を作ります。作り方は同じでも、ひとつひとつ違う表情を持つ《光の箱》は、図書館に降り注ぐ、子ども達へのお祝いの光です。目に見えているのに手にとることはできない光。《光の箱》は光自体の存在や特徴を、簡単なしくみでわからせてくれる科学と芸術の接点にある作品です。すぐれた遊びの要素もありながら、目でみる光という視覚認知の構造を鮮やかに見せる作品です。[黒澤浩美]

To make a light box, you cut off the bottom of an empty box, cover there with a tracing paper, fill the box with cylindrically rounded mirror film, and paste cellophane of various colors on the outside. If you hold it up against a powerful light source, it will shine beautifully. To celebrate the opening of “Tamagawa Children's Library,” participants make boxes of light. They make boxes in the same way, but each box has its unique expression. This light box at the point of contact between science and art will show you the features of light itself.

1964年青森県生まれ、山形市在住。東北芸術工科大学情報デザイン学科准教授。第18回現代日本美術展大賞を受賞。《光の箱》などを作るワークショップを開催。簡易な仕組みでありながら、光学原理や映像機器の基本システムを応用し、見て、触れて、五感で体験する作品を発表している。

Born in Aomori in 1964 and currently lives in Yamagata. An associate professor of Information Design of Tohoku University of Art and Design. Awarded the grand prize of the 18th Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition. He holds workshops making “Light Box.” Matsumura creates artworks adopting the optical principle and the basic system of visual equipment, so that people can experience them with their senses.
