A 120-year old machiya (wooden townhouse from Edo period) that still remains in Yokoyama-cho is renovated and used again in this project. The artists inspected about ten vacant machiya houses based on their research during the “IKI-IKI Project” last year, and have chosen this house. Working with local young architects, students of Kanazawa Institute of Technology and Kanazawa College of Art, an NPO for preservation and reuse of machiya, and craftsmen who graduated from Kanazawa Institute of Traditional Crafts, the unit worked hard cleaning, measuring, and renovating the house from August through September. They removed the annexed area facing the street, reproduced the lattice and reinforced the connection with the outside. It will be used as public space during the exhibition period, where artworks are displayed and people can stay as a trial experience.
